About the Society

The society was founded in 1976 to promote island-wide interest in astronomy.

It has a membership of about 150 people of all ages with interests in the various facets of amateur astronomy; from observation and recognition of the constellations, stars and planets to specialised activities like astrophotography, variable star observing, nova hunting comets, lunar, planetary and solar observation and photography.

We also hold an extensive library of astronomical books which members may borrow free of charge.

iowobsOur monthly meetings are held at the Newport Parish Church Centre , Town Lane (see links page for map), at 7.30pm on the fourth Friday of each month except December. We have talks given by members and invited guest lecturers, covering a wide range of subjects from the elementary to specialised professional astronomical activities. Visitors are very welcome to these regular functions.

Observatory meetings are held more frequently at the Observatory at Newchurch
