INFORMATION

Cross Solent. It is anticipated most delegates will cross as foot passengers from Portsmouth harbour on the ‘Fast Cat’ which depart at 15 and 45 minutes past each hour. There are several long stay car parks close to the sea front Book through to Shanklin station. On Ryde pier board the train (ex London underground rolling stock – some vintage 1930’s!!) The trip to Shanklin is quite picturesque. VAS personnel will transfer people to the observatory.

By car. Expensive but a possible consideration if you can fill a vehicle. Ferries depart from Gunwharf Road on the hour and half-hour. Summer Saturdays are very busy and the journey must be pre-booked in both directions if this mode is selected. Crossing time is approx 40 mins plus approx 20 mins to observatory.

4th, 5th and 6th October 2007 – Sputnik Celebration:
On 4th October, 2007 it will be 50 years since Sputnik became the world’s first artificial satellite. Vectis Astronomical Society will be celebrating the occasion at their observatory in Newchurch on Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Sat 6th of October.

There will be displays and talks about rockets, and maybe the chance to fire your own water rocket and listen to and see satellites passing overhead. There will also be a quiz with prizes. The party will be open to the public, and we are hoping to invite some school parties to join in.
